Foaling News

We are delighted to announce that our foundation broodmare, Noumea, has produced for us the most delightful colt foal by Coalmans Touch. Born on the 26 October 2005, Flynn is the long awaited full brother for C.Coaltown and C.Coalstorm who are now 5 and 4yrs old. A classy colt, Flynn is already showing that something special.

Sadly, Princess Dell, also due to Coalmans Touch, had placenta problems late in her pregnancy and delivered a still born colt foal. Dell will return to Coalmans Touch this spring.

New Broodmare

Another new arrival on the farm is the purebred Irish Draught mare, Kilmanagh Banrion, owned by Anne and the late Thady Ryan. We are very excited to have the lease of Banrion as she is one of only 4 purebred mares in the country and the only one exported from Ireland. While she is not a prolific breeder, she has left some quality purebred progeny, several of which has been exported to Australia. Banrion is a delightful mare and we are looking forward to the opportunity to try breed a purebred irish draught foal. Check out Banrion on our mare page.

Another “import” to the farm is the 3yr old irish sport horse Paddy. Bred by Colin and Raewyn Price of Croftlea stud, Paddy is by Coalmans Touch and as Colin and Raewyn have relocated to Australia, we are preparing Paddy for sale. Paddy has wonderful movement and is absolutely huge, standing at 16.3hh now!!! View more of Paddy on our for sale page.

Departures

C. Coalstorm has been sold to our niece Kylee Simpson. Kylee lives near Lake Coleridge and Stormy has spend the winter months hacking out on Ryton Station. Kylee is now preparing her to compete under saddle. Having owned an irish mare prior to spending a few years grooming in the USA, Kylee is looking forward to having an irish horse to compete again. We wish them the best of luck and are looking forward to seeing another Coleraine horse out under saddle.
We decided to reduce our TB broodmare numbers over winter and passed Yrovi onto Cherie Te Amo. We wish Cherie plenty more lovely foals from her.

Update on Coleraine Horses

It was fantastic to catch up with C.Coaltown and Jess recently. Jess kindly brought Rain up to show him as progeny of Coalmans Touch at the recent Christchurch Stallion Parade. Jess had him looking and going superbly. Rain has grown into a very impressive horse and this pair are most certainly one to watch in the future. Jess is doing a really fantastic job of producing Rain under saddle and he is all credit to her.

More exciting news from the pair is that they have been competing successfully in show jumping and eventing.

Great news from Jannine Thompson in Australia, that C.Redemption has passed his inspection and is now a licenced stallion. Now a 3yr old, Red is to serve his first book of 25 mares this spring. Jannine reports that Red has some very good mares booked to him and they are delighted with his stud work. He has grown into a lovely stallion and it is very exciting having a Coleraine Horse standing at stud in Australia.

Show success

After a bit of an absence from the show ring, we have been out and about to two shows this season with the two yearlings, C.Remembrance and C.Coalfire. C.Coalfire has been very successful, winning her class at both outings, whilst C. Remembrance has been 2nd and 3rd.

Update on Coleraine Coaltown

We have recently heard from Jessica Fieldes that her and Rain have done their first registered dressage outing at Prelim level scoring 55% and 59.6%, gaining their first dresage point! That is very exciting news, so well done Jessica and Rain. Before Christmas they also won Champion Hack at only Rain's 3rd show under saddle after winning both their novice and open classes. We are eagerly awaiting pictures of the pair jumping as Jessica reports that he is schooling well over fences.

Coleraine Remembrance
Coleraine Remembrance

We had an excellent day at the Canterbury Horse and Pony Breeders Show on Saturday 12 February. It is quite a big task taking a team of four horses, including a mare and foal, but well worth the effort thanks to the hard work by our team of helpers - Kylee, Georgia, Maddie, Katie and Burgundy.

Our ½ irish mare Jill (Irish Mist) won her mare class and much to our delight went on to take the Irish Draught Adult Championship.

Her filly foal by Coalman's Touch, Mindi (Coleraine Remembrance) took 2nd place in both her foal class and foal futurity class. It is a great outing and education for the foals and Mindi behaved impeccably.

Our recently purchased 2yr old Rothery London, placed 2nd in her age class and her lovely movement gained her 4th place in a very large Best Paced Youngstock class. London was having her first outing and her behaviour was superb - she just took everything in her stride.

Coleraine CoalstormColeraine Coalstorm also placed 2nd in her 3yr old class.

She then went on to win the 3yr old Futurity class and then to cap off a successful day, she took 2nd place in the 3yr old Futurity Finals, despite having missed her yearling year.

Always a delight to handle, Stormy too behaved impeccably.

Youngstock Freejumped

We recently freejumped Coleraine Coalstorm (Stormy), our 3yr old filly by Coalmans Touch. We were very excited to find her showing the same talent that her full brother C.Coaltown showed and couldn't believe how similar they were!!! She had such good technique both infront and behind and jumped very freely and willingly showing scope and ability.

Coalstorm freejumping

We also very lightly free jumped our new purchase, the 3/4 bred 2 yr old filly Rothery London, and she also showed some real talent which is very exciting for the future. This filly also has stunning movement. She has settled in very well and is being prepared now for the Canterbury Horse and Pony Breeders Show in February.

December 2004
Foaling is now over and we had a very emotional, stressful one this year.

It really began back in early August when Noumea slipped twin fillies to the RID stallion Coalman's Touch. That was quite distressing as we had so been looking forward to her third foal by him.

All four of our mares were due to foal at the end of October, mid November so it was a busy time.

First up was Yrovi who produced a delightful bay filly by Coalman's Touch a week early on 22 October. This filly is very correct with three white socks, a lovely star and very good bone. She is doing extremely well and looks to be going to be very big!

Yrovi's 2004 Coalman's Touch filly Yrovi and her 2004 Coalman's Touch filly

Next to foal was Cee Cee who produced, with a helping hand, a filly by the Holsteiner stallion Corlando, exactly on her due date, 2 November. Another lovely foal with one sock, a star and a ship. All was lovely for 48 hours then Cee Cee became ill and in heaps of pain. An internal tear was the problem and it was all fingers crossed it would heal. But it was not to be and we tragically lost Cee Cee a week later, leaving her wee filly, now named Hope, an orphan. Luckily Hope had been taking milk from a bowl whilst her mother was ill, so it was a simple matter of stepping up the feed. We then tried unsuccessfully to put her on two different foster mares, so we are now rearing her ourselves, using our 28 year old gentle gelding, Binty, for company.

Hope is now doing very well. When she is out in the paddock she comes and drinks her milk and then heads back over to Binty quite happy and content.

Hope - Coalman's Touch x Cee Cee

After losing Cee Cee we were very nervous leading up to our last two mares to foal who both went over their due dates.

But the maiden TB mare, Ginger, duly produced yet another filly by Coalman's Touch on 13 November. This filly is really superb, being tall and leggy, hence the name Elle! Complete with two hind socks she is a real character and is lovely. However I didn't rest until she was three days old! Elle is also doing very well and is an extremely athletic filly with the cutest face.

Ginger and her Coalman's Touch filly

Ginger's 2004 Coalman's Touch filly

The final mare to foal was our lovely Irish Sport horse mare Jill (Irish Mist). Now we have desperately wanted a filly from Jill as being by the RID stallion Coalman's Touch it would be ¾ bred Irish making her a valuable breeding prospect. With three fillies already in the ground I though our chances were pretty slim!

But Jill produced two surprises for us. First her night of foaling totally took us by surprise. On the morning of 14 November when I went to feed Jill I was totally taken aback to find her with a foal! And then stunned to find it was our much-wanted filly! And absolutely gorgeous she is too, with a white face and two hind socks. In memory of Jill's previous owner, who was killed in an accident, we named the filly Mindy and are absolutely delighted with her. Given that she is ¾ Irish, she is not too heavy and is going to be a stunner. Just right, in fact! And Mindy is quite a character already, just like her mum!

So ends our eventful spring. Our two empty broodmares, Noumea and Princess Dell have both returned to Coalman's Touch and are now waiting their first scan. We will be leaving Yrovi and Ginge empty this year.

New Irish Draught Bloodlines!!

We have very exciting plans for Jill as we have purchased, along with a small number of other breeders in New Zealand and Australia, frozen semen from Ireland from the RID stallion, Classic Vision.

Classic Vision is an excellent type with a competitive jumping career behind him. We have purchased three doses, one to use this breeding season and two next season.

So Jill will be inseminated with Classic Vision semen with it arrives and we are very excited about increasing the gene pool of Irish Draught bloodlines in New Zealand.

Classic Vision

New Broodmare

To further increase our bloodlines and breed up to 7/8 Irish we recently purchased the lovely two-year-old filly Rothery London from Sue Anderson. Lundy is by Coalman's Touch out of the well performed Irish Sport Horse mare Wynyard Irish Fleur, who is by that great RID sire Laughtons Legend. Lundy is a lovely type with stunning movement.

Sold as a broodmare due to an injury she had to her mouth, our plans are most probably to breed from her as a 3 year old next season possibly using Classic Vision semen to produce a 7/8 Irish draught. We also plan to do some inhand showing with her after Christmas. And as she is so lovely we are planning to break her in and see how she goes as she is just too good to just be a broodmare!

Coleraine Coalstorm

Coleraine Coalstorm has now been backed and is going well under saddle. Professionally done for us by Kaylene McCormick, Stormy has a great attitude to her work. Her temperament really is superb. She is now ready and waiting for a loving home. Watch out for pictures of her coming soon!

May 2004
Well winter is nearly here and all the horses are looking decidely woolly! However autumn has been relatively kind and we have plenty of grass, so the broodmares are all in excellent condition going into winter. Roll on spring!

Coleraine MonarchWe are very pleased to announce that our weanling foal, Coleraine Monarch, by Coalman's Touch out of Princess Dell, has been sold to Rachel Howarth of Palmerston North. Rachel flew down a couple of months ago to view Monarch and has been waiting patiently for us to wean him. Rachel intends to show Monarch as a hunter and possibly event him as well, and is considering keeping him entire for future breeding all going well. He is a lovely colt, with superb movement as this picture of him shows, and we are sure he will have a huge future ahead of him.

We wish Rachel all the best with Monarch and look forward to keeping uptodate with news from him in the future.

April 2004
Coleraine CoaltownWe are very proud (and a bit sad, too) to announce that we have sold our stunning three-year-old Coleraine Coaltown to Jessica Fieldes from Oamaru. We had a great response to our advert for Rain and Jessica was the first person to come out here and ride him. We don't believe we could have found a more perfect home for Rain. Jessica is 19 and is studying nursing at Otago University. Jessica has been riding for 11 years, holds her Pony Club B certificate and has enjoyed much success in all disciplines. Jessica has competed at Springston Trophy six times and been in her Pony Club area's Pony Club Championship team twice, competiting once. To add to this she was in the Talent ID South Island Eventing Squad in 2002, has ridden elementary dressage, 1.20m showjumping and novice eventing. Such talent in one so young!

Jessica informs us that her plans for Rain are to spend the next year on dressage and showing, competiting in 4-year-old classes. However, her passion is eventing and her aspiration is to compete Rain in Intermediate/Advanced eventing and to compete at Taupo and Puhinui Three-Day-Events!

But at this early stage of Rain's career, Jessica plans to just see what discipline that he will excel in. Jessica is looking forward to the challenge of bringing a young horse on and is very excited with Rain and the talent that he already shows.

We wish Jessica a very successful future with Rain and we know that he has a home fit for the king that he is! We will be closely watching Rain's career, so watch our website for news of him in the future.

We recently took Coleraine Coalstorm out to another inhand show and are delighted to say that once again she handled the outing with no fuss and came home with nine ribbons from 12 classes. This included winning her 2 or 3 year old hunter class and 2nd in her 2 or 3 year old crossbred class. While she has been a late developer, she is certainly a filly with a big future.

February 2004
Coleraine Coaltown

Coleraine Coaltown

Coleraine Coaltown made a very successful debut under saddle at the New Zealand Grand National Horse and Pony Show on the 30 January, ridden for us by Kaylene McCormack. Entered in just one class, the First Year Under Saddle Saddle Hunter, "Rain" performed extremely well, especially considering he has been backed for just 10 weeks.

He was totally unfazed by the occassion and we were delighted when he gained a Top Six placing, resulting in 3rd place.

This was even more wonderful when you consider that the winner was a 14-year-old Medium Dressage horse in his first year in the "show ring". To cap off the the day, Rain was placed 4th in both the 2 or 3 yr old Sport horse and the 3yr old Hack or Hunter.

We had a very busy, but successful day at the Canterbury Horse and Pony Breeders show on the 15 February. Ably helped by young Gemma Carson who groomed for us, we took a team of four horses in. Our lovely colt foal, Coleraine Monarch took 2nd in his Hunter or Irish Draught foal Futurity class. We are very grateful to the wonderful sportmanship shown by Scott and Barbara Dobson who allowed the class to be rejudged as we arrived just as the judge awarded them 1st place with their lovely colt, also by Coalman's Touch.

Monarch also went on to take 3rd place in a very strong Irish Draught foal class, with an amazing 6 foals presented for judging.

Coleraine Coalstorm
Coleraine Coalstorm
Irish Mist, our broodmare, remembered all her training by her previous owner, who had shown her extensively inhand as a youngster, and was placed 2nd in her dry mare class and then went on to take Reserve Champion Adult Irish Draught. She also placed 3rd in Best Paced Adult.

And our two year old filly, Coleraine Coalstorm at her first outing since she was a foal placed 2nd in her Hunter or Irish Draught Futurity class and then took 3rd in her two year old Irish Draught Filly class. We were absolutely delighted with Stormy as she was a perfect lady to handle, float and show.

January 2004
Well it is hard to believe that it is now 2004!

A busy spring period delivering mares to and from studs is now over and we are pleased to say that we have five mares in foal for next season. Noumea, Irish Mist, Yrovi and Ginger Star have all scanned postitive to the RID stallion Coalman's Touch and CeeCee to the holsteiner Corlando. So all going well, next spring will be a busy time for us here at Coleraine Horses.

Preparations are now under way to do some inhand showing with our horses in the next few months.

Coleraine Coaltown is going to the NZ Grand National Show at the end of January and will be doing a class or two under saddle. He is working extremely well for a young horse that has only been broken in for nine or so weeks as the picture of him shows (ridden here by Kaylene McCormack).

Coleraine Coaltown

C. Monarch, now three months old, is growing so fast and is a really stunning colt. He is being handled in preparation for an outing to the Canterbury Horse and Pony Breeders show on February 14.

Irish Mist, C. Coaltown and C. Coalstorm are also being prepared for the Breeders show, but restricted travelling space means that only two of them will actually be going!

23 November 2003
The moment we have been waiting for for three years has arrived - our lovely three-year-old Coleraine Coaltown (by Coalmans Touch RID) has been backed!

He is being done so professionally for us by Kaylene McCormack that these pictures were taken at only his fourth time under saddle! What is even more amazing is that I had a ride on him, including a trot and what a moment that was for me. It was superb and even though I don't do a lot of riding at present, he felt so safe and not at all like a very newly broken youngster!

We even gave our eight-year-old daughter Georgia a wee lead around on him. Talk about amazing irish temperaments! We continue to be delighted with this very special horse.

A big disappointment this spring is finding our mare Noumea had fooled us and was not carrying a foal at all! So only one foal this year. However, Noumea, Yrovi, Ginger Star and Irish Mist have all been sent to visit the Irish Draught stallion Coalmans Touch and Cee Cee has gone to the holsteiner Corlando. So next year is looking like it will be a very busy spring foaling. Check out our broodmare page as we have added some photos of the mares.

November 2003
Coleraine Monarch at 12 hours old We are delighted to announce the safe arrival of our first foal for the season - a delightful colt by Coalman's Touch (RID) born to Princess Dell on Friday morning, October 31, 2003.

We have decided to name this lovely colt Coleraine Monarch and are absolutely delighted with him. He is superbly marked with a star and two even white socks on his hind legs. Dam Princess Dell sprung a bit of a surprise on us with his birth - she did not really wax up or get overly tight in the udder to indicate foaling was so close when checked at dusk the previous night. So when I was bleary-eyed checking the paddock by torch light at 5.00am I was somewhat taken aback to see an extra wee set of eyes!

Both are doing fine and Monarch is quite a character already!

We have recently purchased two new broodmares, Irish Mist and CeeCee. Go to our mare page to meet these two mares and also meet the rest of our broodmare team.

May 2003
We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have sold our weanling irish sport horse colt Coleraine Redemption (Red) to Mrs JM Thomson and Mr CD Trainor of Cottesbrook Park Sporthorses in NSW in Australia. Red is by Coalman's Touch (RID) out of our TB mare Yrovi (by Imperial Seal). Jannine advises that plans for Red include standing him at stud in the future. This is exciting news for us here at Coleraine and we wish them all the best and look forward to hearing news of Red in the future.
April 2003
We are delighted to announce that we have sold our rising two-year-old holsteiner filly Coleraine Corness (Nessie) to Louise and Adam Dunn from Adlou Farm in Drury.

By the holsteiner stallion Corlando and out of a well-bred thoroughbred mare, Nessie is destined to be a future foundation broodmare for the Dunn's stud.

Louise advises that Nessie is also likely to be shown in-hand and under saddle as well.

We wish Louise and Adam well with Nessie.

Yes, our horses are bred to jump!

C. Coaltown, our two-year-old, was recently free jumped and the results, pictured here, speak for themselves!

As well as that wonderful jumping ability, Coaltown has absolutely stunning movement, conformation, temperament and a huge amount of presence for good measure!

Coleraine Coaltown

An outstanding show season inhand last year as a yearling has seen Coaltown win the NZ Irish Horse Society's Inhand Performance Competition for 2001/02. Limited outings this season have seen him consistently placed, winning his 2 yr old hunter class at the 2002 Christchurch A & P Show and then being awarded the NZ IDHS Sash for the highest place registered Irish Horse in the Inhand Section. At the 2003 NZ Grand National Horse and Pony Show held in Rangiora recently, Coaltown won his 2 year old class and went on to be awarded Runner-up NZ Grand National Champion Led Hack or Saddle Hunter Youngstock.

We have decided against selling Coaltown at present, despite keen interest from the USA, instead he will be broken in and produced under saddle for us as a 3 yr old.

2003 Foals:
We are excitedly awaiting the arrival of 2 foals due in October 2003. The mares are in lovely condition at present due to a kind summer so far.
